Worthy of His Call
By Steve Crowley
”So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.“ 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 (NLT)
“Asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of His call.”
Wow, what an incredible prayer and what an incredible conviction. When I first read these verses I thought “who’s worthy” we are all sinners and fall short of God’s righteousness so how can we possible live our lives worthy of His call? I don’t about you, but I’ve messed up more than I want to admit to, and yet I know God has called me. Yet there are days where I am completely unworthy of the grace God has given me.
”But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,”Ephesians 2:4-6 (ESV)
“But God,” God is in control. His mercy, love and grace does what we are incapable of doing, “by faith we have been saved.” Our responsibility is to surrender to God by awakening to the truth of His Word.
”You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.“ John 15:16 (ESV)
”And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.“
Romans 8:30 (ESV)
So if God chose us and gifted us with a God driven purpose do we know what His calling is?
”And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.“ John 17:3 (ESV)
First and foremost, we are to know God, just not to know of God. The only way to know God is to develop a personal relationship with Him. The more we learn of God the more we get to know Him and the closer we sense His presence in our lives.
”Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”Jeremiah 29:12-13 (ESV)
O gracious and loving Father, thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your Son to show us the way the truth and the life so we could be reconciled with You. Lord God, we earnestly pray that we can be worthy of Your call upon us and may we share the love of Jesus as our testimony of Your glory.
For it is in the name above all names, the King of kings and the Lord of lords that we pray.
Amen
